Applying Agentic AI in communication leadership

Future focus

Agentic AI represents the next evolution beyond generative AI tools, moving from simply creating content to actively managing workflows, making decisions and automating actions across systems. In a communications and external affairs context, I see significant potential for AI to support areas such as executive communications, employee engagement, stakeholder insight, campaign management and sentiment analysis, helping teams operate with greater pace, personalisation and strategic focus. The key point is that these systems increasingly connect actions together rather than operating as isolated tools.

I also recognise that most organisations are still in the early stages of AI maturity, using AI primarily as an assistive productivity tool rather than a fully autonomous capability. For communications professionals, the opportunity is not just adopting the technology itself, but understanding how to apply it responsibly, balancing efficiency and innovation with governance, ethics, transparency and human oversight.

I see the future role of communications leaders increasingly focused on strategic judgement, trust, culture and shaping narrative, with AI enhancing delivery and insight rather than replacing human decision-making.
